Umesh Yadav, Quinton de Kock

South Africa would have loved their openers to give them a solid start after India piled up 497 for 9 (declared) in the first innings of the Ranchi Test. But instead, lost both the openers in the first two overs.

On the last ball of his first over, Yadav bowled a soaring bouncer to put Quinton de Kock in an awkward position. Eventually, the indecisive de Kock ended up gloving it to the Indian wicket-keeper Wriddhiman Saha. The 26-year-old southpaw could only muster a paltry 4 off 6 balls, courtesy one boundary.

Evidently, South Africa’s gamble to make de Kock open the innings didn’t yield any rewards.

In the previous over, Shami had sent back Dean Elgar for zero in a similar manner.
